Geocache Description:

From here you can see Mount Ascutney in the distance. It is a monadnock, a remnant of an ancient volcano. Its name comes from the Abenaki word "Ascutegnick" which was a settlement at the confluence of the Sugar and Connecticut rivers. Ascutney was called "Cas-Cad-Nac", mountain of the rocky summit, by the Abenaki. At one time in the last century there was a granite quarry on the mountain but the stone proved to be too high in iron to be commercial viable. Remnants of the mine are visible on the mountain today. The high prominence in the foreground is Velvet Rocks. Please take care not to disturb tree plantings.
