Hidden in Atwood Park, this geocache commemorates two historical figures in Newburyport. Across the street in the yellow house on School street is the home where the Rev George Whitefield (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Whitefield) died. Whitefield was a popular fire and brimstone preacher from Old South Church and he helped spread the Great Awakening in the American colonies prior to 1770. Many of the founding fathers visited Whitefield in his tomb in Old South, where he remains today. To the left and down School street, next to old South's meeting hall, is the birthplace of another forgotten Newburyporter: William Lloyd Garrison, "The Liberator" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Lloyd_Garrison). His statue stands in Brown Square across from City Hall. Garrison lit the flames of civil war by taking an unpopular, and unflinching, stand in favor of emancipation. He published “The Liberator" - a newspaper popular among abolitionists of the day - and became a lightning rod in the movement to free the slaves. The location of the geocache is the site of the former Jackman School. More info on the Jackman school can be found here: http://nbptma.com/?p=474 #2 of local Newburyport area History Hides Series
