Geocache Description:

This cache is part of a geo-art series dedicated to interesting facts about California. The caches in this series are all within the La Purisima Mission hiking trail areas. Bring a pen/pencil to sign log sheets, tweezers for any tiny caches, small items to trade, and hiking necessities (food, water, sunscreen, etc.). Beware of poisonous plants and wildlife. Please take care of all caches and replace exactly as found to ensure they last a while.

On February 25th, 1942, with Pearl Harbor fresh on everyone's minds, something happened over the skies of Los Angeles.  Just after 2:00am that morning, the people of Los Angeles were awakened by air raid sirens.  It was the first time ever that an airborne enemy had been engaged in the continental United States, but nobody to this day knows who or what the enemy was.  Civilian and Defense Officials alike were unsure what they saw that morning, but defense missile batteries opened up regardless.

Shrapnel and a few unexploded shells fell from the sky and landed around the suburbs, and amazingly only five deaths were reported, and most of those were from traffic accidents and heart attacks.  The Army claimed the threat wasn't a hoax, but no bombs were dropped and no planes were shot down.  Searchlights found nothing in the skies, but someone claimed to have seen some massive unknown craft hovering almost directly over her home.

Reports ranged from 1-50 aircraft but stories never matched and nothing was clear.  The city was blacked out for security, and one person found the darkness to be the perfect cover to murder a 40 year old woman.  Even the Los Angeles Times and other major news agencies reported the incident, but none would venture a guess as to what happened exactly.  Check out Battle of Los Angeles (not the movie) information online to learn more about this mysterious event.
