Geocache Description:

A very challenging series that will take you on a traverse across the magnificent Jonkershoek Cathedral.

The Jonkershoek Cathedral, or more commonly known in Afrikaans as Die Katedraal, consists of Second Ridge Peak (1515m) and Third Ridge Peak (1522m). There are numerous routes to the top, ranging from fairly easy scrambles to very exposed climbs, but this series will only guide you across the two most popular ones.

This is a long and tough traverse. With 16km of steep and rugged terrain it can easily take up to 10 or 11 hours, so make sure you will have enough time considering gate hours. Come fit and able and bring enough water, food, warm clothing and good shoes with good grip. The weather up there can change in a matter of minutes.

Jonkershoek is open from 07:30-18:00 during Apr-Oct and 07:30-19:00 during Nov-Mar. A permit at R40pp is required to do the hike and can be bought at the gate (free for WildCard members). Groups are limited to 12 people.

The series consists of 5 caches in total, 4 of which contain clues to the final that you need to make note of. This cache can then be found at:

The Route

The recommended way to do the series is in the following order, but you're welcome to do it in reverse as well. Either way, start at the Panorama trailhead and make your way up to the junction. Here you can either turn left and follow the contour path to start with the Slab Route, or turn right towards Bergriviernek to do the series from that side. Make use of the provided waypoints to guide you.

Stairway to the Cathedral

(GC5X0H4)

The Slab Route is one of the easiest routes up the Katedraal. That doesn't mean it will be easy though. You will need to climb the many steps leading to the top. Don't forget to make a stop at the Top of Slab Route for some breathtaking views.

The Cathedra

(GC5ZRJ6)

Second Ridge Peak is the official peak of the Katedraal and also the best seat in the house. Whether you came from the Slabs or Bergriviernek side, this will be a very welcome spot to enjoy the wonderful views over Jonkershoek and beyond.

The Sanctuary

(GC655JV)

Third Ridge Peak is the highest point of the Katedraal, the perfect place to regain your strength. The views are amazing on a clear day with many peaks visible all around. The closest is Banghoek Peak just across the saddle and is well worth a visit if you have the time. Add about an hour to your journey if you wish to take this little detour.

Path of Good and Evil

(GC655K0)

The long, but interesting route between Third Ridge Peak and Bergriviernek offers some spectacular scenery along the way. On one side you have the beautiful Jonkershoek Valley and on the other, the rugged cliffs of Banghoek Peak. Here you will definitely need a head for heights, especially when meeting The Green Mamba...

The Final Cache

This cache is the fifth and final one in the series. Once you have figured out the coordinates, make your way over to GZ. The cache contains a logbook and pencil along with some goodies. Make sure it's latched up and well hidden once done.

Enjoy the Traverse!
