Granite is an igneous rock formed of interlocking crystals of quartz, feldspar, mica, and other minerals. Granite is a plutonic rock which means that it forms deep underground and rises to the Earth's surface through plate tectonics. Liquid granites slow cooling gives atoms time to migrate to the surface of growing crystals resulting in a coarse rock with a wide variety fo grain sizes. Granite makes up 70-80% of Earth's crust with large masses of granite sometimes found in large mountain ranges like the White Mountains here in New Hampshire.
