Esta cache localiza-se num dos últimos vestígios construídos do Comboio da Foz, apelidado "A Máquina", uma pequena locomotiva a vapor que, partindo da Rotunda da Boavista, descia por esta avenida em direcção ao mar, virando na zona da Fonte da Moura e romando à Foz pelos campos agrícolas do Monte da Ervilha. Inaugurada em 1874, a linha tinha o seu termo na estação de Cadouços, à Senhora da Luz na Foz. Na segunda metade do séc. XIX, a Foz do Douro tornou-se uma importante estância balnear da região, assumindo desde então o estatuto de zona nobre da cidade, que a elite escolhe para morar e passear nas suas praias e passeios públicos. Em 1882 a linha é estendida a Matosinhos, altura em que é aberto o túnel onde a cache se encontra, que permitia a ligação entre Cadouços e a Rua de Gondarém, sob o Monte da Luz (no topo do qual se encontra um farol do séc. XVIII). A linha manteve-se em funcionamento até 1914.
This cache is found in one of the last built remnants of the Foz Tramway, called "A Máquina" (literally, the machine), a small steam engine that departed from Boavista Rotunda and down the avenue towards the sea, taking a turn to Foz in the Fonte da Moura area and crossing the farming fields of the Monte da Ervilha (a few of which still survive). The railway was opened in 1874 and had its final station in Cadouços, close do Senhora da Luz in Foz. During the second half of the 19th century, this part of the city became an important summer resort, assuming since then the status of privileged area of Porto, the place the elite chooses to live and stroll in its beaches and boulevards. In 1882 the railway was prolonged to reach Matosinhos, for the purpose of which this tunnel was opened, allowing the train to cross the Monte de Luz hill (on top of which there is a lighthouse built in the 18th century), thus connecting the station of Cadouços to Rua de Gondarém. The tram service lasted until 1914.
