Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Hazen Memorial Library! This cache is a two-stage mystery. Solving the puzzle below will lead you to stage one, which contains information needed for the final. You might want to attempt when the Library is open; hours are listed below.

Stage One:

To find the first stage, find the call numbers of the following titles:

  • Origami: the art of paper folding (Robert Harbin)
  • What if? : serious scientific answers to absurd hypothetical questions (Randall Munroe).

Both these books are available at Hazen Memorial Library, so you could go in and check their call numbers. There are also plenty of librarians who can help you find the call numbers, and several computers which I'm sure would be obliging. Or, you could simply head to the C/W mars website and look the books up. Once you've found the call numbers, use them to derive the stage one coordinates:

  • N 42° 32.origami-2
  • W 071° 38.What if

If that isn't clear, subtract two from the call number from Origami: the art of paper folding, and use it as the last three digits of the north coordinate, and use the call number from What if? : serious scientific answers to absurd hypothetical questions as the last three digits of the west coordinate. Stage one is at these coordinates.

Stage Two: Final

At stage one, there is a riddle. It may be difficult to find, but it is there. The answer to the riddle is a single word. Compare that word with the following list of hints for the final; every letter in the clue word is a corresponds to a clue that leads to the final:

  • A) It is about eye level.
  • B) It’ s on the ground.
  • C) It’s camouflaged.
  • D) Check the right side.
  • E) There is room for plenty of swag.
  • F) Look near the movies.
  • G) Look behind something.
  • H) Ask the desk.
  • I) It is near a computer.
  • J) It is magnetic.
  • K) It is outside the building.
  • L) It is in the entryway.
  • M) It is in the quiet reading area.
  • N) It is in the children’s room.
  • O) It is near the historical documents room.
  • P) Pull something down.
  • Q) Lots of dust about here.
  • R) Lots of dirt around here.
  • S) It is near the magazine rack.
  • T) Lift something.
  • U) Check near the northeast corner.
  • V) I’m surprised the cleaning staff do not take this.
  • W) You will need a flashlight.
  • X) Look near a specific book (check the clue.)
  • Y) look near something you can’t check out.
  • Z) look near a tree (no tree climbing required.)

For instance, if the word was PRIDE, the hints listed under the letters P-R-I-D-E are the ones useful for finding the final. Follow the clues to find the final and sign the log.

A note on the difficulty rating:

  • The stage one puzzle is 1.5 stars.
  • Finding the clue for stage two is 3.5 stars
  • solving the word for stage two is 2 stars
  • finding the final using the word is 3 stars

I have rated the cache 4.5 in difficulty as each step uses different skills. This cache might be fun to solve as a group.

If you are stumped, a few of the librarians may know where the final is, but first, try finding it yourself. Please be stealthy when finding both stages of this cache, and be sure to thank the librarians on your way out.

Congratulations to Boston Brewins for being the first finder!
