Treble Clef #39 - MTV
Am 01.08.1981 ging MTV erstmals auf Sendung und wie vielleicht bekannt ist mit „Video killed the Radio Star“ von den Buggles. Die Form von Nischenfernsehen war damals neu und dementsprechend pannenreich war die Anfangszeit. Dennoch etablierte sich dieses Format relativ rasch, auch aufgrund des Ausbaues des Kabel-TV-Netzes weltweit und besonders in den USA. Jährlich wurden Zuschauerrekorde verzeichnet und schon bald erkannte die Musikindustrie selbst das Potential, zuvor waren Musikvideos meist entweder Archivaufnahmen, die billig zusammengestoppelt und an Labels o.ä. verschickt wurden oder Live-Mitschnitte, die dann entsprechend verarbeitet wurden. Erst mit MTV wurde das klassische Musikvideo zu dem, was man heute noch darunter versteht, ebenfalls wurde hier der Begriff des VJs geprägt. Nach wenigen Jahren hielten andere Sendungen Einzug ins Programm, als Beispiel sei hier der Cartoons Beavis and Butt-Head genannt. Inzwischen ist vom ursprünglichen Format leider nichts mehr übrig geblieben. Die heute unter MTV Europe oder MTV Germany geführten Sender verzichten seit den späten 90ern endgültig komplett auf die Ausstrahlung von Musikvideos. Dennoch sind und bleiben diese drei Buchstaben legendär…
Zur Blütezeit von MTV in den späten 80ern war das Musikvideo für namhafte Künstler ein Teil der Visitenkarte und in dieser Form ein gänzlich neu geschaffenes Medium. Ich kann mich noch erinnern, wenn man zu gewissen Zeiten 5mal am Tag auf MTV umgeschalten hat, war die Wahrscheinlichkeit relativ groß, zweimal oder öfter das gleiche Video zu sehen – „Heavy Rotation“ nannte man das damals. Des Weiteren ist das Format MTV Unplugged erwähnenswert, bei dem große Namen in kleinem Kreis ihre Hits stromlos live gespielt haben und hierzu nun die Frage: Wer war der erste deutsche, der in Zuge dieses Formates auftreten durfte:

On 1st of August 1981 the braodcast of MTV started with the Buggles song „Video killed the Radio Star“ as some of you might know. This kind of niche TV was totally new at that time and so some technical breakdowns were regular at the start. But this format made ist way to fame very quickly. New records in number of viewers were registered every year thanks to the development of wordlwide cable networks worldwide and espesially in the US and soon music business itself discovered discovered the potential of this format. Before that music videos were mostly some archive material that was edited in a cheap way and sent to labels and so on or they were live recordings that were also edited later on. MTV made the Music Video what it is right tot he present and also the term VJ was invented there. After a few years other forms of braoadcasts appeared on MTV, one of the first was the Cartoon Beavis and Butt-Head. Nowadays nothing of the original format survived. Todays networks called MTV Europe or MTV Germany for example do not show any music video anymore since the late 90s. Nevertheless these three letters remain legendary…
IN the high times of MTV the music video to a song was a part of the musical business card for famous acts in the business and a totally new formed Medium in its kind. I remember switching to MTV lets say 5 timas on a day the chance was quite high, to see the same video for at lest twice – they called this „Heavy Rotation“. Furthermore the MTV Unplugged series is worth mentioning, where big names performed their big hits in front of a small audience without electricity and here´s the question: Who was the first german, who performed at MTV Unplugged?
