Geocache Description:

A visit to the former King Ridge ski area, now conservation land.

This cache was inspired by a few others in New England which spotlight downhill areas which are now closed, but not forgotten. The New England Lost Ski Areas Project NELSAP is a wealth of stories and pictures about these ski areas.

In the 1970s and 1980s, I lived in the greater Boston area. King Ridge was a reasonable day trip of under two hours, fun and affordable. It closed after the winter of 1994/1995, and the land and equipment put up for auction. In 1999, developer Frank Stewart gifted 441 acres of the area to the town of Sutton. This cache, as well as the two others leading to it, or on that land. It is protected by a conservation easement by the Ausbon Sargent Land Preservation Trust.

Parking is along Hominy Pot Road at the King Hill Reservation sign, N43°22.994 W071°58.043. The walk to the cache is about 2/3 of a mile. The cache is placed in an area which will show you several of the ski runs. The ski runs all had names from Alice in Wonderland. Just before the cache you cross White Rabbit, followed by Knave of Hearts.

This cache has been placed with permission from the Sutton Conservation Commission.
