Geocache Description:

Dust off your shoulder pads, puffball skirts, parka jackets and neon-coloured linen suits (delete according to gender and preferences ;-) ) and take a trip to the decade that taste forgot! Re-visit a time when a micro was a state-of-the-art computer, the only mystery was "who shot JR?", and a film pot was a camera accessory!

Beachie loves 1980s

Beachie ❤ 1980s is a series of caches themed around the 1980s, located around Peterborough City Centre. The caches are intended to provide a variety of hides and types, so there'll be something for everyone.

Each cache is related to a different 1980s thing pertinent to a different year of the decade. We've tried to tie the themes in to the location where we can. In addition, there are some bonus caches. These aren't bonus caches in the geocaching sense of information to find one cache contained within other caches. They're just extra caches we added as we ended up with more ideas than years in the decade.

All the caches in the series are "stand-alone" in that they don't require you to complete any others. You can do them all in one sitting or just dip in and do one or two at a time as your time permits. You also don't need to do them in chronological or any other particular order - do them in whatever order works for you.

Click on elements of the magazine above to see the caches in the series. Alternatively, go to this bookmark list...

This one

New Romanticism was a pop culture movement which had its beginnings in the nightclub scene in London, particularly in a nightclub called the Blitz (now no longer in existence).

It came about partly as a reaction to punk, partly as a successor to the Glam Rock era of the 1970s. Whereas Punk and the Two-Tone ska movements of the time focussed on social issues and urban decay, New Romanticism was very much aspirational and escapist.

The fashions were varied and striking, often based on historical themes, with frilly fop shirts of the English Romantic period (hence the name), Revolutionary France, 1930s Cabaret, and more. Both sexes wore cosmetics such as eyeliner and lipstick.

Any look would suffice if it was suitably individual and eclectic. However, the dress code was strict, and potential patrons would be denied entry if they weren’t dressed with sufficient creativity – including, so the story goes, Mick Jagger on one occasion.

The music was Synthpop – eerie synthesizer music combined with catchy dance beats.

So many of the leading figures within the movement had connections with the club. Steve Strange was the doorman and Rusty Egan was the DJ (both of Visage), Boy George and Marilyn both worked there as cloakroom attendants. Spandau Ballet was the house band.

Other acts associated with the movement, rightly or wrongly, include Ultravox, Soft Cell, Duran Duran (more of them elsewhere in the series) and, King of the dressing-up box, Adam Ant.

We've brought you here because the Blitz nightclub was on Queen Street in London. You are now on its Peterborough counterpart.

It aint what you do, its the way that you do it...

At the published co-ords you’ll find a memorial set in the ground. This mentions a number of countries and time periods. Substitute them for letters below (In each case, you’re looking for the starting year of each period):

India 19AB

Cambodia 19CD

Bosnia 19EF

Now look around. How many urns are atop the roof of the building at number 10? Call this G.

The building immediately on the left of that one has how many bricked-out upstairs windows? Call this H.

The cache can be located at:

N 52° (E-A-F)A.(D-F)(A+G)(A+H)
W 000° (D-A)G.(A+F+H)C(B-A-H)

Is there something I should know?

All of the answers can be found within a few metres of the published co-ords. The final cache is around five minutes' walk away.

In view of the fact that the starting location is a memorial, please treat it and anyone there respectfully.

Please make an educated decision about the level of muggle activity when you arrive at GZ, and if you find it's just too muggly, we'd suggest you return another time - we'd rather you protected the cache. Thank you.

You got the right stuff?
