Plane spotting is the act of observing, photographing or registering the registration of one or more aircraft, gliders, balloons, airships, helicopters and ultralights. Spotters, as they are called, are known to always be at airports, alone or in groups photographing and observing aircraft, with compact cameras up to DSLR cameras.
The term appeared in World War II in some countries that suffered attacks of German bombers and began to charge citizens to raise a warning in the case of approaching the bombers.
Today the hobby is practiced almost everywhere in the world and continues to grow more and more. There are sites where spotters share their photos and organize meetings and events at airports for spotting.
In Europe it is common to see airports offering aircraft observation areas, if the airport does not have one, spotters are looking for locations around the airport where they have a reasonable view of aircraft movement.
