(EN) The so-called Hárshegy Sandstone Formation can be found in the environs of Budapest. The yellow, reddish brown or greyish rock consists mainly of quartz grains (sand or small pebble size), but sometimes it contains also some fire clay and coal deposits. The Hárshegy sandstone deposited in shallow marine environment during the Oligocene, about 30 million years ago. The sandstone is hard and persistent because of the quartziferous matrix and therefore it is a beloved building stone. It is frequently used for public buildings in Budapest, e.g. the steps of the Hungarian National Museum and the plinth of the Exhibition Hall of Hungarian Natural History Museum were made of Hárshegy sandstone.

(HU) A Hárshegyi Homokkő Formációba sorolt kőzet Budapest környékén található. A sárga, vörösbarna vagy szürkés színű kőzet szinte teljes egészében homok vagy apró kavics szemcsenagyságú kvarcszemcsékből áll, de helyenként tűzállóagyag- és kőszéntelepeket tartalmaz. A hárshegyi homokkő anyaga az oligocén korban, mintegy 30 millió éve, sekélytengeri környezetben rakódott le. A többnyire kovás kötőanyagú, kemény, tartós kőzetből készült Budapest sok középületének lábazata és kerítése, többek között a Nemzeti Múzeum lépcsői és a Természettudományi Múzeum kiállítási épületének lábazata is.
