Geocache Description:

You can find the cache in the abandoned cemetery of one-time Márcadó village in Zselic Environment Protection Area.

In the 10th and 11th century the inhabitants of Márcadó village were serfs directly of the king. 30 families, that is about 300 persons lived in this village. They developed advanced beekeeping in the Zselic lime forests. They supplied mead as tax for the Royal Court. The name of this village literally means as it follows. Márc = mead, adó = tax. (The mead is an alcoholic beverage that is made from diluted honey and hop by fermentation).

At the end of 11th century king Saint László gave this village in the company of other 9 villages to Pannonhalma abbacy.

Márcadó became depopulted two times by way of enemies. At first (in the 16th century) by osmanly Turkish ravage, for the second time in the course of Rákóczi-freedom war (against Austrian Habsburg-house at the beginning of the 18th. century).

Márcadó disappeared once for all in the middle of 20. century because of lack of infrastructure (road, electric main etc.).
