Geocache Description:

Below is details for those considering the walk into the Darejo Tree.

This cache caters for those who want an old growth forest experience without getting to far off the beaten track, not taking into account that it is 2 hours south for phone reception and petrol and an 1 hour north for the same.

While the road is dirt it is maintained and really only becomes impassable in the infrequent snowfalls the area gets. Of course any dirt road can be hazardous to the inexperienced dirt road driver or even just because the conditions have varied slightly. Add in locals travelling at high speed, people on the wrong side of the road cutting corners and log trucks, you still need to be very careful driving here.

So its a simple carpark cache. Don't worry its a bush carpark at the start of a trail of caches into the Darejo Tree. One of the biggest trees in East Gippsland.

When placing the caches, the track had just been brush cut and scraped. I cannot be sure that happens all year road. For that reason the trail can become overgrown and hard to follow. The trees are marked and it should be easier to follow the gap through the vegetation for the experienced hiker, but people really need to be aware that while the actual risks aren't that high, if something goes wrong you are really stuffed up here. I'd dare say over winter this track may only get 1 or 2 users a week.

Please let people know where your heading before leaving. Caches have been placed along the track that can also act as waypoints along the way, so don't delete them as you find them. At Least 1 point has been added to the terrain ratings due to the information that needs to be given to the lowest common denominator, i.e. the person who really needs to consider if they should do this trail, and the distance you need to travel to get here.

The walk is listed as being 5kms return and took 3 hours when placing the caches and taking a million photographs. Due to the surface it should considered as easy off track walking or difficult on track walking. It is steep in places, is almost certainly going to be wet. All the normal risks of walking in the bush should be considered magnified.

BUT REALLY THIS IS TRULY ONE OF THE MOST STUNNING AREAS IN VICTORIA TO VISIT.

If you do not feel capable to do the full walk you can do the caches "Loggers ahead" and "Brown Barrell" They are both along the ridge line and fairly flat. I also recommend walking down the road to the "Neighbours cache". From the safety of the road you can immerse yourself next to the amazing Sassafras trees along the stream or the ferns heading up the hill opposite and still be under some truly amazing trees, listening to the calls of Lyrebirds.
