It's fun driving along Route 9 and seeing all of the places where Route 9 was rerouted over the years. Here is one of the places where it is obvious what it used to be.
A roadside grab on an old section of old Route 9. This is now Sparrow Lane but Route 9 used to come through here. You are looking for a camo pre-form container, maybe winter friendly, but probably not really.
This is a dead end road that ends in a turnaround. It's also a good spot to park for hiking in Molly Stark State Park when the gate is closed.
From reviewing Vermont Agency of Transportation map archives it appears that this section of Route 9 was rerouted between 1980 and 1990. Route 9 traveled right through here, crossing the little bridge you just crossed to get here, before rerouting to make a wider road with a climbing lane. I added a photo that shows part of the town highway map from 1980, available here for further study: 1980 AOT Map
This is fifth in a growing series of caches marking old sections of Route 9 between Brattleboro and Bennington.
