Nanih Waiya Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

pater47: Well, after roughly 600 calls, the official answer is - yes - you can still go back to the cave mounds.....but you have to have a tribal or game Warden escort. Since this isn't very practical, I've decided to archive what has to be my favorite hide.

In other news, I also found that they've completely re-done the gazebo - which means there's a 99.99% certainty the cache is gone anyway.
In other other news, I also found out they're going to re-do the old bridge trail through the swamp from the little mound (the one everyone knows about) to the cave mound. When this is done and opened back up to the public, I'll likely resurrect this as an earthcache.

Difficulty and terrain will largely depend upon time of year and how well you study your maps. It's a very short walk from where you can park. Legend has it that the Choctaws spent several generations living in this cave mound. Most entrances to the cave have been sealed but at least one is supposedly still open for a short distance. However, going in is certainly not advisable and probably prohibited. IMPORTANT NOTE: The gate to this area is only open from 8 a.m to 4 p.m.. Frequently the gate across the road will be closed. This will require a lengthier walk and probably means water is at least partially over the road. Cache container is a standard ammo box. You may want to bring a flashlight to check for critters before reaching for it.

Degree of difficulty has temporarily been bumped up because it seems the vehicular access gate is closed more often than not now and one of the few roads back here is closed right now.

To learn more about the cave mound, the history, the legends, and of course, the monsters living in it, do a search for "Nanih Waiya". Beware the Shampe and Bohpoli. http://www.uga.edu/~toli/nanih.html
