Geocache Description:

A classic park and grab along a quiet road.  There's a nickel for FTF.  A nickel, like what the Scotch knew how to hang on to.  No room for much swag, but you could trade nickels.

Congrats to the Plow for FTF. He left the nickel for the next cacher. Let's save up some small change, and let a kid take that.

Scotch Hollow.  This is a portion of Newbury that was largely settled by Scottish people in the 1840s.   Many Scottish names are found in the cemeteries around here.  Enough generations have gone by that many of their descendants have no idea where their ancestors came from.  They may assume they are of English descent.  Instead, they have this amazing Hibernian ancestry, which accounts for how they could acclimate to this northern climate, with similar hills, beauty, and many of the hardships that they left behind in Scotland.  The name of the road should be a clue to the living as to who built these farms, and laid those stone walls.

One eighth of my own ancestry is what used to be called Scotch Irish, so that term always interested me.  I learned as a child from Scotty on Star Trek that Scotch was the drink that the Scots drank, it was not the people.  But in New England, it was a synonym for Scots, or Scottish.  We can assume that is how this area and road was named.

Today it is a meandering road, that doesn't seem to go to where you want to go.  Why?  It goes to places that are no longer population centers.  It goes to Newbury Center for example, which is now a very quiet rural area, (which has an old church where there is another cache).

So enjoy some back roads in Newbury.  The cache is very simple, where you think it would be.  The road is not paved there, with just enough room for a quick stop on the shoulder.

May not be winter friendly.
