It is popular for fishing which, despite the insignificant appearance of the river, is surprisingly good. Bream, yelloweye mullet, estuary perch and the occasional brown trout are caught in the estuary. Upstream, the Barham River holds brown trout. The river's name is derived from the Aboriginal words Barrum or Burrum, meaning "river" or "junction of two rivers"
