Dock Bay (Te Anau, Southland) Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Nemesis: As I was in the area, as some have expressed concerns about the environmental impact of this cache, and as there was another cache nearby, I decided to archive it. I'm sorry about giving no warning of the cache's removal. I didn't see any additional damage to the moss due to the cache.

Thanks to all 23 finders for their trade items. The only original items left were the flower pot and the two dice. The idol from Bali was converted into a travel bug called Te the Bali Idol by RangerChaCha, with a final goal of returning to Dock bay from the USA. But duvalcrawlcouple have had the TB for over a year now, and I doubt that it will ever return to Te Anau.[:(] The items in the cache when I recovered it are shown in the photo. I have been placing them in caches around Dunedin.

Cheers,
Donovan.[:)]

Geocache Description:

Location: About 4 km south-west of Te Anau, Fiordland, New Zealand.

The stash is above ground, but GPS reception is poor.
A short walk in the bush is involved.

Initial Cache Contents:

* A packet of 10 Lipton Lemongrass and Ginger tea bags
* A jar of slightly burnt homemade marmalaid
* A 220 g tin of Watties baked beans
* A sling shot glider (a 747)
* A pack of cards
* Two dice
* A CDR
* A mouse trap
* A plastic pinball game
* A 9999 in one electronic game
* A 3 litre (approx.) flower pot (ceramic)
* A carved and painted idol from Bali (thanks Ted)

Directions:

The stash (Accuracy 35 m Elevation 224 m) is hidden in a 30 litre white screw top plastic bucket, about 600 m north-west of the car park (S 45°26.624' E 167°41.022' Elevation 228 m). Walk down the road to the control structure on the Waiau River. Walk across it to the start of the Kepler track (shut the gate after you). Now, follow the right branch of the track leading to Dock Bay for between 300 and 400 m, then head left into the bush toward the stash for about 150 m. See the hints for more detail.

Note! I should mention at this point that you are now in a national park, avoid damaging the fragile mosses on the ground as you walk, also try to take a different route to the stash than others (i.e., vary your entry points into the bush), thus avoiding unsightly tracks. Oh yeah, as always, bring a map and compass (we don't want you getting lost, do we ;).

You may get to the car park from Sate Highway 95 by turning south-west at about 2 km south of Te Anau (at S 45°26.292' E 167°42.860' Elevation 245 m) and then continue for about 2.5 km down this road.

State Highway 99 is a great scenic route to and from Invercargill. There is an historic suspension bridge at Clifden you can visit, Riverton is quite nice, and Monkey Island is interesting too (park at S 46°18.039' E 167°43.658' Elevation 3 m). Te Anau and Manapouri have plenty scenic boat and aeroplane tours that you could go on (if you can handle their prices).
