The cache is a Regular-size screw-top plastic jar. It holds a log, a pen and a pencil, and some swag.
The coordinates will bring you along Harkness Road, Melton. On the east side of the road at GZ is the Melton Gilgai Woodlands Nature Conservation Reserve, 34 ha of woodland, consisting of Grey Box and Yellow Gum trees.
The woodland is a dry, delicate environment, but has a rich variety of vegetation and animal life. Many endangered plants are here, so is a large variety of native birds. Over 100 kangaroos graze in grassland adjacent to the eastern edge of the woodland, while koalas (often carrying young) can sometimes be seen in the trees.
Parks Victoria owns the reserve. The City of Melton manages it for environmental and conservation purposes. Entry is allowed only with permission from the City of Melton's Environmental Department. They give permission for two escorted tours a year.
If you drive along the track just outside the southern edge of the reserve and see the rubbish dumped there you'll appreciate why there is a fence around the reserve. The City of Melton does an excellent job of clearing away rubbish that is dumped at the sides of country roads.
The reserve is bordered on the east and south by a proposed public cemetery, the Melton West Memorial Park, to replace Melton Cemetery which reached its capacity in 2017.
