First in the Abandoned Ski Area Series. Cache is a clear micro with log, one small swag piece and a small wooden token for FTF.
Mount Whittier takes its name from poet John Greenleaf Whittier, who would visit a camp house (now gone) near the base of the mountain in the mid 1800’s. Ski operations were busiest in the 1960’s and 1970’s, but lack of snowmaking forced closure in 1985 after a few years of dry winters. Today, little remains except the original gondola lines that cross Route 16, and a few small buildings around the base.
This cache is on the “back side” of the mountain, more easily accessed from Route 25. There are a few decrepit buildings on a small slope along with some still standing chair lift support posts. These lead up the hill to a small building housing some of the old lift machinery. This building is right next to the road. Here you will find the cache. Tread carefully, the shack is in disrepair. Don’t worry, you barely have to go through the door. Check the hint if need be.
Park along side of road, but use caution in the winter with passing plows.
