This cache is named for Passaconaway, perhaps the most powerful leader of the Pennacook Confederacy. Placed along the highway named in honor of his grandson, Kancamagus, Passaconaway lived in the 1600s, and united a dozen tribes within Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts under the umbrella of the Pennacook Confederacy. While the Pennacook's main village was down by what is now Concord, it is believed that the Pennacooks spent a lot of time in the White Mountains. It is even believed that after Passaconaway died, his spirit travelled up Mount Washington, which was a holy mountain to the Pennacooks.
