The new Synagogue – which we can find in the city center of Szeged (Jósika str. 10.) – was built between 1900 and 1903. Its architect was Leopold Baumhorn and the chief characteristics are due to rabbi Immanuel Löw, who gave advice to the architect about the decoration and symbolism. The building is 113 years old and the Foundation for the Synagogue of Szeged deals with the operation and maintenance. The Foundation and the Jewish Community of Szeged are working together trying to save and renovate the building so it can be stay in good condition for the next generations, visitors and will be used for religious, cultural aims and for tourism. This eclectic building is the biggest concert hall in the city, between april and october they organize several concerts, classical and pop music as well. The following artists held a concert there: Xaver Varnus, József Gregor, Budapest Klezmer Band, Symphonic Band of Szeged (Szegedi Szimfonikus Zenekar), Molnár Dixieland Band, Gábor Presser, Zsuzsa Koncz and Zorán. Its most famous program is the annual Jewish Cultural Festival in the autumn with several Hungarian and international concerts, and different art, literature programs. During the Szeged Open Air Festival there is an organ concert in the Synagogue every Sunday in July and August.
The Synagogue is a very famous destination for students, Hungarian and foreigner groups. It’s open every day (exept Saturdays and Jewish holidays) for turists and for groups. Guided tours are also available in English for foreigner groups.
