Lagoa de Pataias Traditional Geocache

A lagoa de Pataias é a principal zona húmida do concelho de Alcobaça constituindo um hotspot de Biodiversidade no pinhal litoral. Encontra-se muito próxima do limite Norte do Concelho de Alcobaça, mais propriamente na Freguesia de Pataias, localizando-se a Noroeste desta vila. O espelho de água apresenta um eixo maior de cerca de 400 m e um eixo menor de cerca de 125 m. A lagoa termina numa linha de água que se prolonga alguns quilómetros para Norte. Esta linha de água é o único escoamento existente, pelo que o seu caudal depende inteiramente da precipitação.

A Lagoa faz parte de uma sucessão de zonas húmidas que marcam o litoral português, situando-se num dos principais eixos migratórios de aves aquáticas que atravessam Portugal Continental (Rio Minho, Ria de Aveiro, Baixo Mondego, Lagoa de Óbidos, Estuário do Tejo, Estuário do Sado e Lagoa de Santo André), sendo imprescindível para o repouso, abrigo e alimentação das aves invernantes

As funções das zonas húmidas (naturais e sócio-culturais) são na sua maioria insubstituíveis e, se substituíveis, muito onerosas. Assim, é de todo o interesse conservar o património existente. Por outro lado, a unicidade do sistema na região reforça a sua importância e a premência de o conservar. Esta responsabilidade deve ser partilhada por todos os cidadãos já que, legar o património natural às gerações vindouras é um dever transversal à sociedade. Aliás, usufruímos atualmente da lagoa porque as gerações passadas souberam estimá-la.

The lagoon of Pataias is the main wetland of the county of Alcobaça constituting a hotspot of Biodiversity in the coastal pinewood. It is very close to the North limit of the Municipality of Alcobaça, more properly in the Parish of Pataias, being located the Northwest of this town. The water mirror has a major axis of about 400 m and a minor axis of about 125 m. The lagoon ends in a water line that extends a few kilometers to the north. This water line is the only existing stream, so its flow depends entirely on precipitation.

The Lagoon is part of a succession of wetlands that mark the Portuguese coast, being situated in one of the main migratory axes of aquatic birds that cross Mainland Portugal (Minho River, Ria de Aveiro, Baixo Mondego, Óbidos Lagoon, Tagus Estuary, Estuary of Sado and Lagoa de Santo André), being essential for the rest, shelter and feeding of the wintering birds

The functions of wetlands (natural and socio-cultural) are mostly irreplaceable and, if substitutable, very onerous. Thus, it is in every interest to conserve the existing heritage. On the other hand, the uniqueness of the system in the region reinforces its importance and the urgency to conserve it. This responsibility must be shared by all citizens, since bequeathing the natural heritage to future generations is a cross-cutting duty to society. In fact, we now enjoy the lagoon because past generations have been able to estimate it.

Entrar na água da Lagoa é estritamente contraindicado. A sua profundidade e o seu solo poderão tornar-se rapidamente em perigos caso entre na água. Como owner desta cache não me responsabilizo por atitudes descuidadas.

Devido ao nível da água da Lagoa, por vezes e em certas alturas do ano, poderá ser díficil o acesso à torre. Caso o tempo aparente estar mais chuvoso leve uns botins.

Convido desde já todos os Geocachers a parar um pouco pelas mesas do parque no outro lado da Lagoa para comer e apreciar a vista. Por favor deixem o local limpo e preservem o espaço.

Respeitem a fauna e a flora do local. Na lagoa existem peixes de rio, patos, anfíbios e alguns mamíferos, caso encontre algum deles respeite-o e não assuste os animais.

Entering the water of the Lagoon is strictly contraindicated. Its depth and soil can quickly become dangerous if you enter the water. As owner of this cache I do not take responsibility for careless attitudes.

Due to the water level of the lagoon, sometimes and at certain times of the year, access to the tower may be difficult. If the weather seems to be more rainy take some boots.

I invite all the Geocachers to stop a bit by the tables of the park on the other side of the Lagoon to eat and enjoy the view. Please leave the place clean and preserve the environment and the park.

Respect the local fauna and flora. In the lagoon there are river fish, ducks, amphibians and some mammals, if you find any of them respect it and do not scare the animals.
