Ribeira da Almaceda Traditional Geocache

A Rede das Aldeias do Xisto é um projeto de desenvolvimento sustentável, de âmbito regional, liderado pela ADXTUR- Agência para o Desenvolvimento Turístico das Aldeias do Xisto, em parceria com 21 Municípios da Região Centro e com cerca de 100 operadores privados que atuam no território.

Estado presentes em quatro Unidades de Paisagem (Serra da Lousã, Serra do Açor, Zêzere e Tejo-Ocreza), as Aldeias do Xisto representam um belíssimo património cultural e natural. Com vastas possibilidades que vão desde a gastronomia à etnografia, das ruralidades e da ligação à natureza e à floresta, as Aldeias do Xisto têm enorme potencial turístico e não só.

O projeto Geocaching Aldeias do Xisto propõe aumentar a oferta de pontos de interesse associados a esta prática da caça ao tesouro do sec. XXI. Pretende dotar cada aldeia com pelo menos duas caches e integrar algumas já existentes em circuitos e percursos pedestres.

The Schist Villages area is a region of Portugal’s interior that has successfully been promoted to tourists. The brand is managed by the ADXTUR association, the Agency for the Touristic Development of the Schist Villages, and brings together 21 Municipalities of the central region of Portugal, and more than 100 private local operations, which all share the common strategy of promoting and revitalising an area where schist stone dominates the landscape.

Present in four Landscape Units (Serra da Lousã, Serra do Açor, Zêzere and Tejo-Ocreza), the Schist Villages represent a beautiful cultural and natural heritage. With vast possibilities ranging from gastronomy to ethnography, rurality and the connection to nature and to the forest, the Schist Villages have enormous touristic potential, among others.

The Geocaching Schist Villages Project proposes to increase the offer of points of interest associated with this practice treasure hunting of the XXI century. It intends to equip each village with at least two caches and integrate some already existent in circuits and pedestrian routes.

Martim Branco é uma aldeia de pequena dimensão situada entre penedias de xisto e de quartzo, que não possui qualquer património construído do tipo religioso ou cultural. A aldeia desenvolve-se a partir de duas vias longitudinais - a Rua Principal e a Rua da Bica - apresentando uma configuração longitudinal. A Rua da Bica - que corre paralela e mais próxima à Ribeira de Almaceda - afigura-se como a rua primitiva do povoado, quer pelo seu traçado quer pelas construções que a ladeiam.

Distando um total de 24km de Castelo Branco, Martim Branco está apenas a escassos 2km da EN112, a estrada que de Castelo Branco procura passar entre a Serra do Muradal e da Gardunha, rompendo a Serra do Açor a caminho da Serra da Lousã.

O nome Ribeira de Almaceda parece estar associado ao caudal de água que nela corre. Assim, segundo PIMENTEL (1881) almaceda é nome de origem árabe que significa "águas abundantes". A ribeira encontrará o Rio Ocreza e este, depois de descansar um pouco na Barragem da Pracana, engrossará o Tejo.

Martim Branco is a tiny village standing between cliffs of schist and quartz, with no built heritage of a religious or cultural nature. The village developed around two longitudinal streets - the Rua Principal and the Rua da Bica – giving it a longitudinal configuration. The Rua da Bica – which is parallel to and closer to the Almaceda stream – is the original village street, which is obvious from both its route and the buildings that line it.

Martim Branco is a total of 24km from Castelo Branco, a mere 2km off the EN112, the road from Castelo Branco that picks its way through the Muradal and Gardunha mountain ranges, breaching the Serra do Açor en route to the Serra da Lousã.

The name of the Ribeira de Almaceda appears to be associated with the flow of its waters. Hence, according to PIMENTEL (1881) almaceda is a name of Arab origin meaning "abundant waters". The stream will join the Ochreza which, after resting a while in the Pracana dam, will go to swell the Tagus.
