Geocache Description:

Yes, as the titles says, this cache is at the Saco Tannery Waste Pits, a toxic site that has since been cleaned up and taken off the Superfund program's National Priorities List.  The cache is not inside the boundaries or close enough to cause anyone harm if there were toxic wastes still at the site.

While there is a pull off from the road here, and not likely any muggles - it is possible that the pull off across the road would find you facing a state police officer as they use that area to enter the nearby Maine Turnpike. And the speed limit on the road here, is a not-very-fast 35 mph, so local authorities also may pull over and be watchful from the same pull out.

The 212-acre Saco Tannery Waste Pits site is located in Saco, Maine. Saco Tannery Corporation operated on site from 1959 until 1981, when the company filed for bankruptcy and stopped site operations. The site was used as a disposal area for process wastes such as chromium sludges, acid wastes, methylene chloride and caustic substances. More than 23 million gallons of wastes were deposited in two lagoons and 53 disposal pits. After immediate actions to protect human health and the environment, the site’s long-term remedy was put in place. EPA took the site off the Superfund program’s National Priorities List (NPL) in 1999.Yes, as the name states, this cache is near the Saco Tannery Waste Pits.  No fear, it is not inside or close enough to cause harm.
