PATCHWORK IN BASALTO
English
Basalt is the essence of the raw material of the walls that cut the Azorean islands. That is why they are distinguished from the rest in the world.
The walls are an enormous natural heritage of the Azores with great visibility. Their function is linked to the survival of the islands, since they are used to protect crops and habitats from the stands, and also define the land.
In the island of S. Miguel, the walls of shelter were very important in the context of the economic cycles of the island, especially of the orange, where they played a fundamental role to shelter the orange trees, noting that these were the first constructions that were made in the Azores to clean the grounds and erect masonry.
The walls of black basalt, through which the lush green of some vines, pastures and orchards erupt, twist in multiple curves, roads, canadas and shortcuts. The landscape becomes even more bucolic inviting to quiet experiences.
In the city of Lagoa Azores, rurality is present in all its territory demarcating spaces with significant historical, cultural and landscape identity. Therefore, it is hoped that the activities related to tourism may be another element to be taken into account in the development of these spaces, mainly due to the conjuncture of abandonment and depopulation.
