In 1870 a route was surveyed from the Boston and Albany Railroad at South Spencer to the center of the village. The issue was brought to a town meeting in 1872 where the idea was voted "to pass over the article." Various other surveys were now made covering this and many other routes. It wasn't brought up again until April 7, 1877, where the article was passed over once again. After several other meetings on the same subject, the town finally, on April 3, 1878, voted to spend approximately $25,000 on building the railroad. In 1878, a 2 1/4 mile railroad was built, connecting Spencer Center with the Boston-Albany Railroad at Spencer Depot NE with the station being at South Spencer. After it was decommissioned and removed, it was tuned into Depot Trail. It now connects Chestnut Street and S. Spencer Road.
Spur trail that connects the Depot Trail to Howe State Park known as Corridor 71. Nice wide path that offers many nice views of the nearby tracks and a few hills for an added challenge. Figured I'd avoid a traditional letterbox hide and go for an easier one to bring a flow of people here to explore. Trick to this cache is finding the right one. Seems my choice of hiding places was already swiped up. So call this a "2 for 1" letterbox. The other letterbox is called "All Things Autumn". Remember to please leave the stamp and don't forget to bring your own!
Congrats to MtnProf for FTF!!!
