Dorence Atwater, a Terryville native, was captured by the Confederates during the Civil War and sent to Andersonville Prison. There he was assigned to the surgeons office to keep records of the soldiers who died there. He kept a copy of the list for himself, fearing the original list could fall into Confederate hands. By wars end, the list totalled 13,000 names. After the war, Atwater and his friend, nurse Clara Barton went back to Andersonville Prison to help the government correctly mark the graves of the fallen soldiers.
The memorial here was dedicated in 1907 and Clara Barton was in attendance. A real piece of American history, please take time to read the plaque.
We had a cache here years ago but it kept disappearing. Trying it again.
Use stealth, there are usually muggles around. Bring a pen. Snow friendly.
