Welling, St Mary. Another Church Micro in the series created by Sadexploration. This cache replaces one previously here GC4C2K6
A cache in the über suburbs that grew in this area during the 1930's. Unlike the centuries-old village churches that the CM series celebrates, this cache marks one of the more modern churches that were established to serve the theological needs of the growing suburban population.
Building began on St. Mary's Church, designed by the architect Thomas Ford, in June 1954. The foundation laying ceremony took place on October 9th 1954, and the consecration of the church on October 1st 1955.
The church comprises a narthex (entrance chamber), nave and shallow sanctuary. The church has a partially disengaged north-west campanile, or bell tower, and externally is in an Italian Romanesque style. The tympanum over the main door is decorated with a form of art which is seldom seen in Britain, known as 'S'graffito', which suitably to the style of the church, originated in Italy.
Some of the internal features such as the font and the altarpiece in the side chapel are re-used from other churches. The large stained glass windows piercing the north and south walls of the sanctuary are both portrayals of archangels, St Michael and Uriel.
You should be standing outside the church looking at the paintings of people above the main door. Count up how many people of each colour (Black, Blue, Gold, Red and White) there are. All people are counted and will go with those 5 colours. Use the majority colour for each person if in doubt.
