Warning

Please note: To use the services of geocaching.com, you must agree to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

This virtual cache is the location of Anasazi ruins. It is a 40 mile round trip backpacking adventure requiring a minimum of three nights in the canyon (4 nights are recommended).

Description:

This little known historical site was a location of a small community of Anasazi Indians.

Preservation:

In an effort to preserve the site, do not touch or disturb any items, rock formations, or walls at the site. Do not touch anything.

The Log Book:

Although this is a virtual cache, a log book is supplied by the National Park service at this site. This log book is for all visitors and is not marked as a Geocaching site. Although the log book is contained in a container, do not leave or take any items from this container.

Logistics:

You will have to spend at least three nights at different location within the canyon to reach this site. To get to this remote site a 40 mile round trip backpacking adventure is in store. An overnight permit to camp is required and must be obtained from the National Park Service in advance. No facilities are available at the site. This site is located in the AK9 Wilderness area where a Overnight Wilderness permit is required by the NPS. Permits to the area are limited. From the Clear Creak area, no trail leads up the canyon to the site. You will have to follow a creek. This is a sensitive area. Do not camp near the actual ruin site.
  1. When visiting the ruins, don't follow one of the foot-trails to them. Take an unused path, trying to hop on rocks. They don't want an obvious use-trail to the ruins. Also, use-trails cause erosion that can lead to the collapse of the walls.
  2. Similarly, avoid walking too close to the walls due to the erosion issues.
  3. Don't gather artifacts into piles or 'collections' - they should stay undisturbed and scattered.

To take credit for finding this cache you must:

  1. Find the location and take a picture of yourself (or another of your team member) with your GPS in hand. (No GPS in the photo - then no found log. Old Photos do not count for anything other than a logged note).
  2. Optional: Describe the nearby feature located at: N 36° 06.898 W 112° 00.706 (WGS-84)

Other Information about this cache:

  1. This Anasazi Ruins Cache was featured in the March 2004 issue of Today's Cacher Magazine
  2. Photos and information of my adventure to the cache area

I was first here in April 2002 and it was great to get back to this area and the ruins again. Had a great hike up to them and then went on up Ariel Canyon for a while, as Cheyava Falls were not flowing. Ariel Creek was flowing better the the upper part of Clear Creek so we stopped and enjoyed the water for a while. The Arizona Redbud Trees were starting to blooom which added a nice pink color to the green area. Had to laugh when I plotted the alternate coordinates on the map before we left, I knew exactly what it was . Signed the register again and dipped in a TB. Thanks for bringing me back to the great area. Find #3366

Six day backpacking trip through the canyon. We had a variety of weather. Was snowing when we drove in, and was snowing when we started the hike the next day until we dropped below 6000 ft. Over the course of the trip we had snow, hail, sleet, rain, wind, and oh yea, sun. Injured an ankle, which made for a difficult hike out the last two days (gotta love
Vicodin). But it was a great trip!

Have wanted to do this cache for a few years now. TFTC.

What an incredible site - it beats any museum exhibit, hands down. It's amazing to see so many preserved artifacts out here, but I suppose there aren't many visitors - only a few logs during 2008 before our march visit.

We did a six day backpack into the canyon, coming down the S. Kaibab and camping at Bright Angel, then heading to Clear Creek on day 2. Day 3 was a day trip down the canyon to the Colorado, and Day 4 was the up-canyon trip to Cheyava falls, these ruins, and the granaries further up. Days 5 and 6 took us back to Bright Angel and then back up to the rim.

One of my friends was brought to these ruins previously by a ranger and was given some good information that I wanted to share here - obviously geocachers aren't swarming to this cache in droves, but it's good for us to treat the ruins right!

Don't just stop here - keep going up the canyon for a few miles and check our Cheyava falls. We were really fortunate to visit the falls at just the right time this year. They are only running for a few weeks a year and it was beautiful!

Thanks so much! This is a backpacking trip I'll never forget.

This was my first hiking trip into the canyon and what a trip it was. We did the 40 miles in 5 days and now that I am back home in Tennessee I wish we could have stayed longer.
Information for future travelers to the Clear Creek area: the metal food containers are soon to be removed by park service so be prepared to store your food by another means.

I have been waiting for months to do this cache! Camped at Clear Creek for 2 nights and did this one on our lay over day. Clear Creek was not clear due to being high and roily. But we were still able to find the ruins and took lots of pictures and signed the log book. Thanks for setting up the cache.
