The first church in the area, south of the current church, now only ruins, was built around 1130 and was surrounded by a cemetery, as it was the custom in those days. In the 13th century this church, dedicated to Saint Michael was given to the Order of Saint Augustine. (Augustine is Ágoston in Hungarian - that is where the name of the square comes from).  By the 14th century, a new church in Gothic style was erected by the order. Later, on the north side, a monastery with a cloister and a well was built. Supposedly the theological school of the order was housed here.

During the Ottoman times (1541-1686), the Gothic church was turned into a mosque - as it has happened to most churches in the city. However, sometimes after 1620, this mosque was demolished and a brand new mosque was built. A small window on the north side of the current church and the ogee window frames on the south side are the remnants of this era.
After the Ottoman rule, in 1710, the monks of the Augustine Order moved back to Pécs. They rebuilt their church on the foundation and remains of the mosque. This Baroque church burnt down in a conflagration in 1750 together with many houses in the neighborhood. It was rebuilt by 1770. After this, the only larger construction was carried out in 1912, in Eclectic style. This is when the Turkish remains were discovered.

The church has one nave. Its 28 m (92 feet) high tower is located in the axis of its front. It has three bells, the largest was made in 1828, the two smaller ones in 1929.

In the niches next to the large window on the front there two statues: Saint Paul the Hermit and Saint John. These statues were surely moved here later, as neither statue depicts the patron saint of the church, nor do they really fit in the niches (they are too small), or to each other.

The altar is from the 18th century. The wall paintings are mostly from the 1930s; the works of Pécs artists, Ernő Gebauer, Emil Gádor Emil, Henrik Stefán (Szelle). The organ was built in 1889, by the local Angter Organ Factory.

To commemorate the miner past of this district, the clock in the tower plays a miners' song every day at 2, 4, and 6 pm.
