There are several geocaches around Tettye, which is an old suburb, a park, a playground, and a historical place relatively close to, and easily accessible from the city center of Pécs by public transportation (bus #33), by car or on foot, if you are fit.
They are all different kind of hides and taking you to different lovely spots, so it is worth planning a half a day or more up around here.
The distances seem little, but don't forget to take the elevation into consideration!
Though your hike is only 600 m (one way), hiking boots are recommended for this one, as you will walk on stairs cut into the rock and steep, rocky terrain, slippery when wet or covered by leaves.
You will walk on the top of the 30-60 m high cliffs of a huge, old quarry. The trail is protected by railings, it is a safe walk!
The quarry was established during the Roman times and was used until the 16th century. Many buildings of Pécs were constructed of the limestone mined here.
Enjoy the view on your way! It is a good excuse for stopping and catching your breath!
The ruins you see below in the middle of the park, (the old quarry's courtyard actually,) are the ruins of the summer palace of bishop Szatmáry. The elegant residence built in Renesainsse style at the beginning of the 16th century. During the Ottoman occupation, the palace served as a dervish monastery, a tekke. This is where the name of the area originates from: Tekke turned into Tettye.
If you look a bit further to the left you will notice the pretty, small, white church on the small peak of Havi Hill. After the Ottoman occupation (1541-1686), the remaining inhabitants of the seriously ruined city were decimated by the plague in 1690-91. The people of Pécs made a pledge that if the epidemic stops, they would build a chapel on the top of the white rock in honor of Virgin Mary. The chapel was sanctified in 1697 and has been a pilgrimage place ever since. It gained its current form in 1780.
A bit to the right the tall, modern building among the small houses used to be the once famous Pécs Glove Factory. Pécs had been well known for its leader industry over the centuries, unfortunately, it is not substantial anymore.
If you look straight, you may see the Tenkes Mountain in a distance. It should actually be called a hill, as it is only 409 m high, but if you hiked its steep slopes, you would probably agree that it deserved the mountain name. It is part of the Villány Mountain, which is our excellent wine region.
