Geocache Description:

This is the first in a series of caches I hope to post corresponding to the California County highpoints. The difficulty of the cache results from MANY miles of driving, and the road condition. This cache SHOULD NOT be attempted during wet weather, as the road can get washed out VERY EASILY! Make sure it is DRY when you go! Obviously, during the winter, be prepared for snow!

This virtual cache is the San Benito County highpoint, elevation approximately 5241 feet.

This cache is a long way away from civilization. Unless you have a 4x4 vehicle, it will be challenging to reach, and probably requires a hike. I've never done the hike, but I would imagine it would be a multi-day hike with multiple thousands of feet of elevation gain. I recommend driving in with a 4x4, that's how I got there. You can drive your 4x4 vehicle to within 50 feet of the cache location. If I have reason to be in this area again, I will replace the virtual cache with an ammo box physical cache.

There are two good approaches to get to this cache, the western approach and the eastern approach.

To approach from the west, exit Highway 101 in King City at County Road G13, Bitterwater Road, and head east. Go left onto Highway 25, and right onto Coalinga Road. Take Coalinga Road, pass Hernandez Reservoir until you come to an intersection with Clear Creek Road. Make a left onto Clear Creek Road. The road here turns into dirt, and climbs steeply to the San Benito Mountain Natural Area. Within about a mile of the summit, make a left onto the summit access road, it will take you directly to the summit.

To approach from the east, head south out of Hollister on Highway 25 until you reach an intersection with County Road J1, and turn left onto J1, Panoche Road. Take Panoche Road for many miles until you reach the town of Panoche. There, bear right at the intersection with New Idria Road, and follow New Idria Road for another 40 minutes or so until you reach the abandoned mining town of New Idria. Here the road ends, and you climb rather sharply until you reach a signed intersection with Clear Creek Road. Proceed along Clear Creek Road until you reach the obvious fire road to the summit, and make a right there.

You can also reach San Benito County Road J1 from Interstate 5. Take the Shields Avenue-Little Panoche Road offramp, 60 miles north of Kettleman City and 30 miles south of Santa Nella. Take Little Panoche Road south until you reach the intersection with Panoche Road and make a left. Then, follow the directions above for approaching from the east.

There are many fun caches to find in this area. If you're coming from the Monterey Peninsula, I recommend approaching from the east, and returning down Clear Creek Road, and through King City. This way you'll have plenty of cache activity to keep the long drive more interesting. My personal favorite caches along this route:
