Geocache Description:

The Pawtuckaway Fire Tower is one of 16 active fire towers in NH. Erected in 1913 the Pawtuckaway fire tower was the first steel tower in NH. It was rebuilt in 2015/2016 and sits on South Mountain at an elevation of 890'. To claim this virtual cache you must visit the Pawtuckaway fire tower and answer some questions, please email me your answers and include your caching name.

Send the answers before logging this cache. You need to complete all the steps for the smiley :)

1. How many steps, counting the concrete footing at the base of the tower to the top floor (including the top floor which is the fire wardens cabin )are there?

2. Standing on the top platform under the fire wardens cabin (not sure when or if it is ever open to the public) look up and you'll see laminated charts for Visible Items of Interest for each direction. Tell me what is the first item of interest for each direction, north, south, east and west.

3. You'll also see on the top platform under the cabin a laminated chart of Visible Landmarks from Pawtuckaway Mt Fire Tower, what landmark is listed after Pawtuckaway Lake and before Mount Agamenticus?

4. Post a photo of you and your gps at the fire tower. If you don't want your face in view, your hand holding the gps will do. If you use a phone to cache I'll need a photo of you or a part of you at the tower.

Logs not in compliance will be deleted.

The easiest way to get to the fire tower is to come in from Deerfield, NH on Reservation Rd to Tower Rd. You can park at the base on South Mountain, there is a rest room available and the trail which is steep in places is only 1/2 mile to the summit. Take note that Tower Rd is only open in the spring, summer and fall. In winter there is a gate and you'll have to come in from the intersection of Reservation and Tower Rd.

There are hundreds of caches in this beautiful state park and miles of trails to enjoy in every season.
