En France, une tombe du Soldat inconnu est installée sous l'Arc de triomphe de la place de l'Étoile à Paris le 11 novembre 1920. Il s'agit d'un soldat non identifié (reconnu français), qui représente tous les soldats morts pour la France au cours de l'histoire.
En 1923, une flamme éternelle est allumée ; elle est ravivée tous les soirs à 18h30 (cérémonie débutant vers 18 h). La sépulture, entourée de bornes de métal noir reliées entre elles par des chaînes, se compose d'une dalle de granite de Vire sur laquelle est inscrite l'épitaphe « ici repose un soldat français mort pour la patrie — 1914 - 1918 ».
Après la Seconde Guerre mondiale, en vue qu'il soit apposé à l'entrée du mémorial, les Alliés font don à la France d'un bouclier de bronze portant en son cœur un glaive enflammé, à la gloire des armées françaises et en mémoire de la Libération de Paris.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier refers to a monument dedicated to the services of an unknown soldier and to the common memories of all soldiers killed in any war.
In France, such a tomb was build under the "Arc de Triomphe" on "Place de l'Etoile" in Paris on November 11th 1920. This is an unidentified soldier (recognized French), who represents all the soldiers who died for France in the course of history.
In 1923, an eternal flame is lit; it is revived every evening at 6:30P¨M (ceremony beginning around 6 PM). The burial, surrounded by black metal blocks connected by chains, consists of a granite slab of Vire on which is inscribed the epitaph "here is a French soldier died for the fatherland - 1914 - 1918".
After the Second World War, in order to be exposed to the entrance of the memorial, the Allies donate to France a bronze shield carrying in its heart a fiery sword, to the glory of the French armies and in memory of the Liberation of Paris.
