Geocache Description:

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD TO THIS SERIES, PLEASE CONTACT THE SERIES OWNER (SEE BELOW)

We are often told (correctly, if somewhat ideologically), that geocaches should take us to somewhere "interesting", and not simply be placed just for the sake of it. The aim of this series is to try and adhere to this ideal by basing caches around details given on an Information Board about the area in which it is situated. By definition, it is hoped that this information will be "interesting", and will help the cacher discover things about the area that would often not be revealed by a traditional cache.

The Local area around Burbage has an active Geocaching community with over 300 live caches within a 5 mile radius. The area is easily accessible via the M69 Junction 1 coming from the South and North

The initial coordinates will take you HERE to the information board

This memorial was conceived after the Peace Day Parade in July 1919, so it seems only apt to publish this geocache to mark Armed Forces Day 100 years later!

"The Burbage War Memorial stands in a small, gated, memorial garden in Church Street, Burbage, alongside the road running through the centre of the village. It takes the form of an unusual looking infantryman with rifle reversed, head bowed, with a high cap and small moustache. He rests on a square pedestal and two-stepped base. The memorial is made from Italian marble. Monies to erect the memorial were raised by public subscription. There are 60 names for World War 1 and 31 for World War 2."

Partial quote taken from the MOD official War Memorial site

What makes this War Memorial unique, is that members of each bereaved family were allowed to choose a rose which was labelled with their loved ones name next to it. At the time of choosing this memorial, Burbage had a well known horticulturist working in the village who specialised in growing and developing roses. He happened to serve in the Territorial Regiment ( Major C C Hurst)and donated the roses from his nurseries.
