Geocache Description:

Protect your rights to public access! We nearly didn't go to this lake area because a private campground has set up a guard station that makes it looks like only members can get in. When we asked the guard if Kelly Lake was now a private lake he had to admit that it was a public PG&E day use lake. He said the tiny sign at the cutoff that indicated that had blown over. On our way out, we propped that large sign up against a tree. I would love it if cachers would indicate in their postings here if that sign is still standing or is on the ground again.

At the guard station, just tell them you are going to Kelly Lake; he will give you a pass and take down your license number because, heaven forbid, you might try to stop on their grounds. The left road through the maintenance area is indicated by a sign, though the guard might tell you to take the road on the right through their campgrounds.

The coordinates are shakey. We took 14 readings, all of the N readings were different, but we got 3 hits for the W.
Our readings varied from 39 18.334 to 18.356 and 120 34.464 to 34.491. So when you get into the area, look for a likely spot. This can be reached by cross-country skis or snowshoes up to about 3 feet of snow.

We drove our Corolla here and only hiked about 350 feet to the cache site. It is a dirt and rock road but doesn't require 4WD.

Original contents of the ammo can are: a sci-fi book, a mystery book, 3 buttons, a deep hog lure, a pewter belt buckle, a metal sculpture of a man breaking a golf club, a mini mouse in a bucket, a sandal keyring, a Moab Brewery postcard/coaster, bandages and two bookmarks.

Have fun and thanks for keeping our access to this pretty lake open. In warm weather, a great swimming area; in the fall, colorful aspens.
