Geocache Description:

This is a park and grab along Route 5.  Bring a pen.

Most of my life I have been fascinated by my own ancestors, and one line has proved harder to document than most of them.  They are my Thomas family, from what was then called Lebanon Crank, CT.  My ancestor, Joel Thomas, lived here in Thetford, along the river, in the 1780s, before they moved to Bennington.   But his little sister stayed here, and she can be documented.

Nearby there is a cemetery where my 4th great grand aunt, Mabel Thomas Newcomb and her husband Bethuel Newcomb are buried.  Bethuel served in the revolution and was at the Battle of Bunker Hill.

Mabel received land from her father in what was then called Lebanon Crank CT, now Columbia. She and her husband Bethuel Newcomb sold the land in 1781, and were living in Thetford VT the next year. There is a story recorded in Thetford's Historical Society that the first home they had in Thetford was on a main crossing for native Americans, who used the home like a free hotel (my words). This made Mabel uncomfortable, and that was in the years when she was having children. She and Bethuel went back to Lebanon for awhile, but returned to another home in Thetford, where they remained the rest of their lives. Bethuel and Mabel had ten known children; Jacob, Luna, Lucinda, Lucina, isaiah, Lavinia, Asahel, Louisa, Isaac, and Linda.

During the same time Mabel and Bethuel were back in CT having children, my ancestors Joel and Hannah were here in Thetford, having children. I have paper trails for Joel from CT to Thetford, to Bennington, to Fairfax, to Compton Quebec, but have never found his grave.  In fact I have never found any of his siblings' graves, except for the ones who stayed in CT.  And except for Aunt Mabel and Uncle Bethuel.  RIP, dearies.

You are looking for a preform.  No room for trades.  There is parking but maybe not during part of the winter.

Congratulations to Looneydog for FTF.
