Welcome to our first geocache hide! We wanted this one to be closer to home, so we chose Prospect Park off of Prospect Street.
We found this hiding spot somewhere where the Pileated Woodpecker pecks. It must have been attracted to something nearby… perhaps a cache? We find this species so interesting, and therefore are including a description of it below. In honor of our first hide, we included a little “prize” for the FTF. Good Luck!
About the pileated woodpecker:
A large woodpecker native to North America. This crow-sized bird normally inhabits deciduous forests in eastern North America, among other places. It is the second-largest woodpecker in the United States, after the critically endangered and possibly extinct ivory-billed woodpecker. The term “pileated” refers to the bird’s prominent red crest, with the term from the Latin pileatus meaning “capped”.
