  • Founded in 1(A-1)43, Wells is the third oldest town in Maine.
  • Just north of Howe’s Floor Store on the east side of Route One (1785 Post Road), a marker sits to identify the site of Col. John Wheelwright’s Garrision. It was from this site that Mrs. Esther Wheelwright (1696-17X0) was captured and taken to Canada in 1703.
  • Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, located on Port Rd (Route 9), was established in 19WC in cooperation with the State of Maine to protect valuable salt marshes and estuaries for migratory birds.
  • The Meetinghouse Museum, home of The Historical Society Of Wells And Ogunquit, was first open for museum tours in the summer of 19BY. This building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • AMTRAK Downeaster passenger train service between Boston North Station and Portland picked up its first paying passenger from the Wells Regional Transportation Center on December 15 200(1+Z).
  • Wells is reached via Exit 1(D+2) of the Maine Turnpike. This was numbered as Exit 2 until mid-2004.
