Windsor Print Works - Freeman Manufacturing

Freeman manufacturing started printing on cotton fabric in 1830 making it one of the oldest printers in the country. It was here that printing on cotton flannel was started in the United States. Over the years and with constant expansions they became Windsor Print works with constant improvements in the processing as time passed.

By 1890 the plant covered nine acres, all in one enclosure, and consisted of twenty-two brick and four frame buildings. By 1909 It was completely equipped for dyeing, printing and bleaching, with 14 printing machines and capability for bleaching 35 tons of cloth per day. They were famous for their cottonsilks, a process where the cotton was subjected to chemical treatment to make it stronger with more luster. In the 1920's the business was taken over by Consolidated Textile Company and closed its doors in 1956 due to import competition. In 1960 the building was purchased and used for storage. In 1973 It was taken over by Economic Development Corp and a section was used for arts and crafts center. In the 1980's The City of North Adams took over the building and it has been used since for various businesses like light manufacturing, art galleries, a print shop ( paper, not cloth), and City School programs. A city visitor center is in the old guard building within a few feet of your location. A=337

Windsor Print works had a backup water supply via a tunnel from Windsor lake. Its told that sometimes during the day the life guards could see the water level drop when they needed water and raise as they pumped water back up. The tunnel is still in existance but no longer used and is sometimes found by mistake when residents are digging in their yards. The final for this cache will bring you to that water supply.
