Barber Leather Co.
In 1831 The Barber Leather Co. was founded by a few wealthy residents. It was one of the oldest manufacturing businesses in North Adams. It converted raw leather into patterned or colored leather that was used for many things such as shoes, furniture, suitcases, chair backs and bottoms, and other items that were shipped worldwide. In 1890 the building was completely destroyed by fire. In 1892 this building was built. 3 years later and again in 1908 expansions caused the building to double in size.
The company employed about 150 people and in 1909 was processing aprox. 175,000 sides of leather a year. A=933
As you can see from the picture, close to 2/3 of the rear of the building is now gone and the roof is falling in. Maybe this will get refurbed also...
