Wall Streeter Shoes
You should be across the street from the remaining Wall Streeter building. The 2nd Wooden building is long gone and was where the parking lot is for the also now demolished St Francis Church
In 1912 James Wall and Edward Streeter created "Wall Streeter Shoe Company" on Union St in North Adams. The name made everyone think of the "Well-To-Do" in the NYC Financial district. By 1920 they had 164 employees making 2,000 shoes a day, and by 1925 Wall had bought out his partner. The great depression was tough on the company but while other companies in the area failed Wall Streeter made it through. By 1936 things had greatly improved again and Wall Streeter gave its employees a Christmas bonus AND a 10% raise. During WWII they were producing 1,000 pair of shoes for the Army a day. In 1955 Mr. Wall received a patent for a new shoe strap that wraped over and hid the laces, and entire section was created to make a moccasin type sport shoe. In 1962 they moved the hand sewn section of the business a few hundred feet up the street in to 10,000sq feet of the old Windsor mill. In 1963 they started manufactureing a new shoe from a simulated leather called corfam. In the 1970's overseas import competition was tough and in the final months of 1974 they announced thier closing. A=256 They were the last shoe manufacturer in North Adams. In Feb 1975 the business was purchased by Florsheim, however only one year later Florsheim announced they would be closing the North Adams factory.
The above picture is after the 1918 flood ( One of MANY they had to contend with before the flood chutes were built in the mid 50's). You should be standing in the doorway across the street in the center of the picture
