Mill series 9 of 14 - read GC8Y7N5 1st

JOHNSON

In 1831 9 acres of land and water power was purchased for $800 and a stone mill was built for the manufacture of printed cloth. In 1839 an additional 300 acres was purchased. New buildings, machinery and workers hired from Europe caused great debt and the business to cease operation in 1846. In 1850 it was reopened for the manufacture of cotton goods until it burned to the ground in 1872. The following year a new mill was built.

View from the front when the reservoir was still across the street to provide water power, ironically where Electric Co and tansformers are now. You are currently at the lower left window

DUNBAR - MAYFLOWER

In 1893 the Dunbar Mill was built next to the Johnson mill with room for 500 looms to produce worsted goods. This mill changed hands in 1905 and was renamed the Mayflower which produced high end worsted suitings. At this time the mill employed 150 people.

In 1937, the locations were sold to the Sprague Electric Company which produced gas masks on the site during WWII, and then converted to specialized materials used in capacitors. Industrial toxic wastes dumped at the site during this period resulted in a contaminated groundwater plume, necessitating the demolition of nearby houses. Sprague closed the site in 2001. A=108 The property underwent remediation to deal with the toxic legacy, and the buildings were demolished in 2007.

The Picture was taken from the roof of the building on the other side of the train tracks, the posted coords should put you apx at the white circle in the picture.
