Keith - Gale – Melanson Shoe Factories
This factory was originally built about 1910 by Keith Shoe Co. At that time it was considered one of the most extensively equipped factories in North Adams. Over the next few years it was enlarged and more machinery added. They made high grade shoes shipped world wide and had a retail store in every major city in the country. A=524. They were producing 1,200 pairs of shoes a day with a weekly payroll of $5,000.
Sometime before 1927 the business became Melanson Shoes which again expanded some. Years later it became Gale shoes until that failed in 1950. An interesting note- in 1948 after a weeks closure, the workers voted to give up a weeks wages in order to purchase new machinery. Soon after they were running again.
In 1950 Cascade school supply purchased the building and they are still there today shipping country wide all sorts of items like chalk, markers, boards, furniture, you name it.
You might also want to note the plaque behind you, This was placed on the Historic registry and is used by the City as a storage shed. ( Prob not what you thought was in there when you pulled up huh? )
