Geocache Description:

Mill series 11 of 14 - read GC8Y7N5 1st

North Adams Manufacturing - NORAD

In 1831 the water power and two and a half acres of land at this site was purchased for $520. A dam was built and canal dug to bring the water power to a 40'x70' stone mill that was completed the following year. The mill had 20 looms that produced print cloth. Soon afterward more of the surrounding land was purchased. In 1851 a 46' long wooden addition was built and another 24' added 8 years later.

About 1863 a large brick mill was built. Up to this time the growing mill community was called Braytonville, but when the brick mill was built it was changed to Deweyville after Mr. Dewey who was the prime influence for the upgrade but when Mr Dewey retired the name went back to Braytonville.

In 1878 the company had fifty looms, 275 employees, and turn out about 20,000 yards of fancy cashmeres per month. In 1904 several additions and storehouses were added. In 1909 the mill was producing cashmere, cheviots, and worsteds ( woolens) with 225 employees and a payroll of about $1,600 a week. The mill continued making textiles until 1947. A=983 In 1954 Excelsior Printing began operations and eventually it was purchased by Crane & Co. In 2016 it was Sold to Integrity Graphics which then moved operations to another location. In 2018 the main mill building was opened up as commerical property with many tenents such as a record store, yarn shop, tax accountant, credit union, rock shop, ect.

The main mill building is open to the public.  Go to the back of the mill for the entrance. Feel free to go in and check things out although most of the old "mill" feeling is gone. Near the center entrance/staircase on the 2nd floor is a little history and the hallways have some pictures. Most importantly there are multiple restrooms and a place to get some food.

The cache final is on the road behind the mill, Old West Main St. This road use to cross the river past the old Fairgrounds and the mill workers used it to get here from Braytonville ( the hill to the South of the mill ) before the newer Rt 2 was built.
