GREYLOCK MILL

In 1846, Messrs. McLellan, Hunter & Co., purchased water-power and ten acres of land for $1,000. They erected a wooden building, put in machinery for cotton manufacturing and built two dwelling-houses at a cost of about $12,000. The goods made were yard wide sheetings.

In 1848 they sold the whole premises to Ansel B. Kain, who failed to make proper payments, and the property reverted to the original owners. In 1851 the entire business was sold to Pitt and Snow, continuing until 1856, when it became insolvent. In 1857 R. R. Andrews purchased the entire property. He made some improvements in the mill and tenements, and manufactured yard wide sheetings.

About 1872 a stock company was formed and the building of a brick mill began, however the company did not exist long enough to finish it. In 1880 another company was formed with Theodore Pomeroy of Pittsfield as president. The building was finished and the manufacturing of ginghams began. In 1885 the mill had 325 looms, employed about 400, and turn out about 250,000 yards of goods per month. They greatly enlarged the buildings, built new tenement homes and greatly improved the grounds. Throughout the next 60 years the mill continued to thrive and expand adding a 4 story spinning building, weave sheds and carding and picker rooms with more than 57,000 spindles and 1,200 looms.

Since then the buildings housed aluminum manufacturing, wallpaper manufacturing, fine lace weaving.

In more recent years many businesses have come and gone in sections of the old mill. Including a toy wholesale businesses, art galleries, antique stores, game room, and a net maker for lacrosse sticks. A=835 Currently it houses Greylock works which has a co-work space for a culinary lab, and craft distillery. The old weave room and engine room are available for events such as weddings, summer market, concert, and theater
