One-room schools were commonplace throughout portions of various countries, including Norway, Sweden, the United States, and Canada. In most small town schools, all of the students met in a single room. There, a single teacher taught academic basics to several grade levels of elementary-age children. While no longer used, several of these historic structures remain standing in rural communities across the United States.
The Capen Riverside School, a beautifully preserved 19th-century schoolhouse with vaulted ceiling, was donated to the Worthington Historical Society by Henry H. Snyder and restored under WHS president Mrs. David Whitmarsh.
