Geocache Description:

This cache is NOT at the given coordinates. To find it you will first need to 'sort out' the Railway Cats of Clare Station.

Note: It may be helpful to print out copies of the grids below. (They’re also in the gallery to make printing easier.)

Many years ago when she was a girl, Sally Perkins was facing a long wait at Clare station for the ‘slow’ train to Cambridge. There were no other passengers about, and so Sally passed the time sitting in the sun, watching cats sunning themselves, hunting in out-of-the-way corners, or ‘patrolling’ the platforms. There were five in all; a ginger, a tabby, a tortoiseshell, a black and a grey.

As a regular passenger, Sally already knew that the Clare station cats were practically considered to be ‘staff’. Indeed, each one of the five belonged to one of the railwaymen: the Station Master, the Porter, the Signalman, the Engine Driver and the Ticket Clerk each had their own feline friend. However, she’d never known any of the cats’ names, nor which one was which, nor which cat belonged to whom.

Just then, a fine ginger moggie jumped up on the seat beside her and allowed himself to be scratched behind the ears. The Station Master, who was passing, said “Sorry miss, my Skimbleshanks is always after some attention. Is he bothering you?”

“Not at all,” replied Sally, “I like cats. So this fine fellow is Skimbleshanks. What are the other cats called?”

“Well, apart from ‘Skimble’ there’s Harriet, Tom, Danny and Molly. Harriet belongs to …” he began, but at that moment Sally’s train arrived, the Station Master went off about his business and Sally departed for Cambridge.

During subsequent visits to the station, Sally determined to find out all she could about the ‘Clare Railway Cats’. Sadly the helpful Station Master was always too busy to engage in conversation, but she did manage to glean the following from various staff members and fellow passengers:

– The Signalman's cat wasn't called Danny

– Harriet wasn't a black cat and nor was Tom

– Molly was a tortoiseshell

– Harriet was the Porter's cat.

– Neither Danny nor Molly belonged to the Ticket Clerk.

– The grey cat was male.

But in the end Sally was not really any the wiser. Can you sort out the cats for her?

Maybe this grid will help you? You could put in ticks (we have done them in red) to represent what Skimbleshanks was (i.e. a ginger belonging to the Station Master) which then means that crosses (we’ve used green) can go in to show what he wasn't. Another cross (blue) could go in to represent the fact that "the Signalman's cat wasn't called Danny". And so on…

Once you have filled in the grid with ticks and crosses you can find the cache coordinates with this second grid. Put a circle around each box that has a tick in the corresponding box on the main grid and then read off the coordinates reading left-to-right, top-to-bottom. We've started it off for you using the ticks you already have:

Purrrrrrrr-fectly simple! But just in case there is a checker which also contains a cache location hint.
